Taiping Street

Taiping Street is the best-preserved thoroughfare retaining the original layout of the ancient city of Changsha. Located in the central urban area, the district centers around Taiping Street, bordered by Wuyi Avenue to the north, Jiefang Road to the south, Weiguo Street to the west, and Sanxing Street and Santai Street to the east. The key area encompasses the historic blocks along both sides of Taiping Street, Xipailou, Majia Alley, Fujia Alley, Jinxian Street, and Taifu Lane, covering a total area of 5.33 hectares.

The fishbone-shaped street layout has remained unchanged for 200 years. Stretching 375 meters in length and no more than 7 meters in width, the district occupies approximately 12.57 hectares. With highly convenient transportation, it serves as a microcosm of "Old Changsha." Since the establishment of the city during the Warring States period, this area has been the heart of the ancient city, enduring over 2,000 years without significant alteration. The uniform architectural features of residences and shops here include small green tiles, sloped roofs, white ridge tiles, fireproof walls, and wooden doors and windows. Older mansions preserve traditional elements such as stone-framed gates, gray-brick walls, courtyard skylights, and encircling balcony railings.

Following its restoration, the Taiping Street Historic District not only retains cultural relics and modern historical sites like the Former Residence of Jia Yi, Changhuai Well, the ruins of the Western Archway of the Ming Dynasty Prince Ji's Mansion, the Former Site of the Tongmenghui’s Progressive Society during the 1911 Revolution, and the Former Site of the Sizheng Society, but also revitalizes time-honored establishments such as Qianyi Sheng Grain Store, Lisheng Salt Merchant, Dongtingchun Teahouse, and Yichunyuan Teahouse.

The district boasts 87 storefronts along the main street, with nearly 30,000 square meters of commercial space. These businesses primarily focus on renowned heritage brands, calligraphy and painting, ethnic handicrafts, cultural leisure industries, and specialty tourism products. The area has attracted numerous luminaries, including Li Fuyu and Li Zao (father-son master calligraphers and seal engravers from Xiling Seal Art Society), facial makeup artist Zeng Jingui, and painter-calligrapher Chen Ximing, who have established studios here.
